University of Southern Indiana Volunteer Child Protection Policy Training.
The University of Southern Indiana is committed to protecting the safety and well-being of children [under Indiana law, a child is anyone who is not yet 18 years of age] who participate in University sponsored programs, both on and off campus. The participation of children in these University sponsored programs requires an increased level of care, and the University requires all students, employees and volunteers to conduct themselves appropriately in the presence of children on campus and/or in University-sponsored programs. All volunteers participating in any University sponsored program involving children must review and agree to adhere to the following requirements of the University’s Child Protection Policy:
When child abuse or neglect is suspected, report it immediately to Child Protective Services (CPS) (Indiana Child Abuse Hotline (1-800-800-5556)) and/or law enforcement and the University Director of Public Safety. When suspected abuse or neglect occurs in an off-campus location, suspected child abuse or neglect must immediately be reported to CPS and/or to local law enforcement officials.
Authorized adult supervision is required: o Two-deep leadership - It is recommended that two or more authorized adult supervisors be present at activities involving children. At a minimum one authorized adult and another adult are required for all such activities. o Unsupervised one-on-one contact with children is prohibited.
When staying overnight, no child is permitted to sleep in the room of an adult other than the child's parent or guardian.
Engage in appropriate conduct when working with children.
DO NOT:
Engage in any form of physical, verbal, or emotional abuse of a child !
Engage in sexually inappropriate conduct or make sexually suggestive comments of any kind toward or in the presence of a child !
Use or be under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs during programs involving children !
Enable, facilitate, or fail to address a child’s use of alcohol or illegal/nonprescribed drugs
DO:
Protect children’s health and safety !
Ensure use of appropriate protective equipment !
Provide appropriate supervision !
Remove a child from dangerous or potentially dangerous situations immediately !
Use appropriate language !
Address and discourage inappropriate behavior by children
